What?
Do you want to grow your own fresh, healthy, organic produce? Have you always dreamed of picking a fresh tomato or cucumber right off the vine and enjoying it where you stood in your own vegetable garden? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, then you’ve found the right place!
The Grow Own Program seeks to improve community food resiliency and provides participants with the basic tools, education, and resources to start a 5’x 20’ vegetable garden plot, for free!
Applications fees to the program are $15 and are nonrefundable. Please note that this is an application fee and does not guarantee acceptance into the program. If for any reason you cannot or do not want to pay the application fee, you may email programs@growoakridge.org for a fee waiver form.
Gardeners may either use their own backyards if suitable, or space in First Presbyterian Church Community Garden, located at 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike. This is your garden, designed by you and with your goals in mind. We are here as a tool to help you achieve them!
Please read our Program Specifications and Expectations tabs down below before you apply. You may email programs@growoakridge.org if you have any questions.
We will have program informational sessions on Saturday, Dec. 14th, 2024 and Dec. 21st, 2024 from 10-11 am at the Winter Farmers Market, located in the lobby of Roane State Community College at 701 Briarcliff Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
Who?

When?
Starting in January 2025! Participants will be required to attend 9 workshops, roughly once a month throughout the growing season. The program and classes will begin on January 15th, 2025 and end October 31st, 2025. See our workshop schedule and topics below.

Conventional Fertilizers or pesticides. Gardens supported by Grow Oak Ridge must be maintained using only organic practices.
Container Gardening Equipment and Education: Our program curriculum is geared towards inground gardens, as is the supplies we distribute. At this time, we cannot furnish the purchasing of containers and soil for growing. However, if you have access to these materials already, we will provide you with seeds and seedlings. Additional or specialty trellising material will be considered on a case by case basis. While we may have one specialty session on container gardening (not guaranteed). Our fertilizers are also for inground garden applications, so you may also need to purchase your own, organic, all purpose water soluble fertilizer.
Deer Fencing: You may need deer fencing if you experience heavy deer pressure in your area. We can give guidance on methods and equipment but cannot fully fund deer fencing.
Flower Gardening: The program focuses on vegetable growing. While we do provide certain flower seeds to encourage beneficial insects in the garden, the education and supplies distributed will be geared towards vegetable production. We ask that 90-95% of your garden space tilled by Grow Oak Ridge is dedicated to vegetable plants.
Perennial fruit bushes or trees.
Gardeners will only receive 1 of the type of tool or equipment distributed. It is up to you to take care of your tools and equipment to keep them in good condition.
